About Me

SHIFTING TERRAINS

Gareth Thomas – He/Him
Social Worker (MSW – Rural Social Work)

Shifting Terrains supports people experiencing grief and loss by 1:1 counselling, creative adventures in nature and structured therapeutic programs. Shifting Terrains also seeks to improve death literacy in the local community by running Arts based events and projects that
create community conversation and cultural change.

Shifting Terrains is grounded in the belief that supporting the health of the individual supports healthy communities which in turn support communities that actively work for social and environmental justice.

Hello and welcome to Shifting Terrains counselling. My name Is gareth (he/him/they). I live on Darug and Gundungurra Country in the Blue Mountains. I am offering therapeutic services from a back ground of Social Work and counselling.

I work from a person centered and strengths based counselling practice that understands that change occurs in collaboration and the counsellors job is to hold space in this process of change.

I also value the therapeutic field of Narrative therapy, Eco-Therapy, Solution focused practice and have skills in relaxation techniques, meditation/mindfullness.

Shifting Terrains offers counselling both in traditional settings, in the therapy room, as well as counselling that works with local  outdoor environments. Counselling can take place on the track, by the creek, in the cave or even by the campfire. It is not ‘counselling in nature’ but rather counselling that works with nature as a apart of the therapeutic alliance.

I also offer community based projects that exist at the intersection of the arts and Critical Social Work Practice. Critical Social Work seeks to understand how the wider systems of community affect the individual
